A dark and dilapidated Tudor home in a suburban Boston neighborhood was given new life through a large addition, interior renovations, and a fresh new color scheme. In our continuing exploration of the idea of ‘compliment to counterpoint’ for additions to historic homes, our approach on this project was to enlarge the home using the same vocabulary and materials in a seamless design. New spaces include a large eat-in Kitchen, Family Room and Master Suite. Landscape work included an in-ground pool, an expanded front terrace, and a new stone terrace off of the Kitchen and Living Room. The traditional leaded windows, stair rails, and paneled walls were restored, and serve as a contrasting backdrop to the homeowner’s eclectic furnishings. DAPstockholm designed the Villa Midgård in Stockholm, Sweden.

Project description
When the client met with DAPstockholm they wished for a solid, secluded house with a maintenance-free facade, a sense of ceiling height and a master bedroom with the benefit of morning sun. They also wished for a solution where they could open up larger windows toward the scenery and have a sheltered space where they could sit and listen to the pouring rain. This resulted in a multi-faceted house where the shape and direction of the different volumes are based on various factors such as the terrain, the light conditions, the views and the privacy. The volumes give the house seven different facades. This and the dramatic nature of the sloping site provide the house with a unique character. Cut-outs in the mountain give space for the outdoor seating areas. In the south-east direction, outside the SPA, one of these creates a significant border between the arranged and the rampant garden.

Bild Architects designed the Blurred House in Melbourne, Australia.
Description from Bild Architects
The first in a series of studies into the adaptation of vernacular Australian suburban typologies, ‘Blurred House’ is a major renovation and extension to an original 1930’s Californian bungalow in Melbourne’s inner-north. Reacting to the established convention of jarring juxtaposition of existing ‘old’ and introduced ‘new’ architectural elements ; the ‘Blurred House’ offers an alternative proposition; that of a blurring between ‘old’ and ‘new’ to produce a hybrid. Gradually transitioning from the vernacular to the contemporary, the division of architectural elements are deliberately ambiguous, producing a unique formal and visual language.

Hernandez Silva Arquitectos have completed the Casa Curato in Zapopan, Mexico.
Description from the architects
The irregular shaped land is located in a small gated community on the west city limits. It is a very quiet place, where neighbors are bound to have a good urban context: calm, surrounded by trees and car free as possible.
The clients, old friends, ask us to develop a comfortable, practical and pleasant house, which forced us to be very rigorous with spaces, circulations and the functional proposal of the house.
The location of the house uses both side boundaries, leaving two entries at the front, one for cars on the semi-basement with angled doors which creates a platform for pedestrian entry. These two boundaries gave the emplacement the form of a “boomerang”, which could increase the scope of the relationship between the house and the garden at the back.

Tony Owen Architects have designed the Kerr House in Sydney, Australia.
Project description
This family house is located close to Tamarama beach and enjoys views of the beach from the upper level. The client sought a minimal light beach house.

The existing house had a lush tropical garden at the rear. We sought to preserve this garden and focus the house so that it opened onto the garden as a large out door room which would be an extension of the living area.

The design is structured around a timber spine wall running along the southern boundary. The new house hangs off this wall. The house opens up to the rear with a large cantilevered concrete wing extending outwards to the garden. This creates solar protection and also extends the space into the garden. The remainder of the house is clad in timber battens and glass louvers to maximise natural ventilation. There is a large central glass enclosure in the middle of the house where the main stair is located. This atrium provides light to the centre of the house

The house was designed according to the principles of passive sustainable design. It uses natural materials such as timber. The central atrium and extensive use of glass louvers maximise natural ventilation and the use of large overhangs promote sun shading. The use of expansive upper deck areas maximise the use of spatial flow and integration with the site.

The house has 3 bedrooms and a family room upstairs, it has an open plan living, dining and kitchen on the lower level with sepparate bedroom/study, laundry and guest bathroom on the lower level.

The external – beach house’ feel of the house is typical of the area. As time goes on, the untreated extenal timber battens will grey to reflect a weathered sea-side feel.
SAOTA – Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects together with VIVID Architects and ANTONI ASSOCIATES designed the Silverhurst House in Cape Town, South Africa.

Description from the designers
VIVID Architects prepared the initial concept design for this home, a contemporary reboot of the more classical architectural styles. SAOTA – Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects and ANTONI ASSOCIATES were then appointed to refine & develop the design and oversee the project to completion.  The facade is Georgian inspired but the modern aspect of the look is driven by a dynamic of recessed and projecting panels and cubes that create courtyards and terraces that articulate and add interest to what is a highly organised shell. The interiors, by ANTONI ASSOCIATES, are equally sculpted.
